About this tool

Instagram caps captions at 2,200 characters, bios at 150, the username at 30 and image alt text at 100. This counter tracks all four limits as you type and flags the moment you go over, so nothing gets silently truncated when you post.

It also counts hashtags and @mentions, and reminds you that only the first ~125 characters of a caption show before the “more” link — the space where your hook has to land.

Writing for the 125-character preview

In the feed, Instagram cuts your caption after roughly 125 characters and hides the rest behind “more”. Whether someone taps to expand is decided by that first line.

  • Lead with the hook — a question, a bold claim or a promise of what they'll get.
  • Don't waste the opening on “Happy Monday!” or a string of emoji.
  • Put the main payoff in the first two lines; use the space below “more” for detail and context.
  • Move your hashtags to the end of the caption or into the first comment so they don't eat the preview.

How many hashtags to actually use

Thirty is the ceiling, not the target. Instagram's own guidance points to 3–5 well-chosen tags, and most accounts see no benefit from maxing out.

  • Mix three types: one or two broad (100k–1M posts), two or three niche (10k–100k), one or two community or branded tags.
  • Skip tags in the millions — your post is buried in seconds.
  • Rotate sets by topic rather than pasting the same block every time.
  • Put them in the first comment if you want a cleaner caption; reach is the same.

Formatting a caption people finish reading

  • One idea per line. Walls of text get skipped.
  • Use line breaks between sections — the caption spacer tool keeps them from collapsing.
  • Emoji as bullet markers make a list scannable without adding characters.
  • Put the call to action on its own line at the end: “Save this for later” or “Tell me in the comments”.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Instagram caption character limit?

2,200 characters, including spaces, emoji and hashtags. Around 125 characters show before the caption is truncated with a “more” link in the feed.

How many hashtags can I use?

Up to 30 per post. Anything beyond 30 is ignored, and stuffing every slot is not necessary — most accounts do better with a focused set.

Does an emoji count as one character?

This tool counts by visible character, so most emoji count as one. Instagram itself sometimes counts multi-part emoji as several — if you are near the limit, leave a little headroom.

How long should an Instagram caption be?

There's no single right length. Quick-hit posts do well with one or two punchy lines; educational carousels and storytelling posts can run 500–1,500 characters. Whatever the length, the first line has to earn the tap on “more”.

Do hashtags count toward the caption character limit?

Yes. Hashtags, @mentions, emoji and spaces all count toward the 2,200-character caption limit. Moving hashtags to the first comment frees up caption space and keeps the caption clean.

What is the Instagram bio character limit?

150 characters, and line breaks count as characters. Prioritise who you help, the outcome you deliver and one call to action.
