How does the Instagram username generator work?

The Instagram username generator builds handle ideas from your name and keywords in three styles: clean (letters only), dotted and underscored. Every suggestion follows Instagram's username rules.

The tool doesn't check availability yet. Search your favourites in the Instagram app before you commit to one.

What are Instagram's username rules?

An Instagram username can be up to 30 characters long and use only letters, numbers, periods and underscores. It can't start or end with a period, and it must be unique.

What makes a good Instagram username?

A good Instagram username is short, readable and consistent with your other accounts:

  • Short — under 15 characters is easier to remember, tag and say aloud.
  • Readable — no stacked numbers or double underscores people mistype.
  • Consistent — the same handle you use on other platforms.
  • Searchable — a niche or location word helps people find you.
  • Timeless — no year or trend that dates the account.

Instagram username vs. display name

Your username and your display name do different jobs:

Searchable?YesYes — use it for keywords

Use the username for your brand and the name field for keywords, then write the bio beneath both with the Instagram bio generator.

How to check if an Instagram username is available

To check if an Instagram username is available, search for it before you settle on it:

  1. Search the exact handle in the Instagram app.
  2. Check the same handle on the other platforms you use.
  3. Run a quick trademark search on the name.
  4. Claim it everywhere on the same day once it's free.

What to do if the username you want is taken

  • Add a niche word: “lauramakes” becomes “lauramakesceramics”.
  • Add a location: “joephoto” becomes “joephoto.leeds”.
  • Add a qualifier: “the”, “studio”, “hq” or “co”.
  • Avoid misspellings and extra underscores that cost you every time you say the handle aloud.

How to change your Instagram username

To change your Instagram username, open Edit profile, tap Username, enter the new handle and save. Your old handle reportedly stays reserved for you for 14 days before anyone else can claim it. Instagram limits how often names can be changed — reports put it at about twice in 14 days — so change it deliberately.

Frequently asked questions

Does this check if the username is available?

Not yet. It generates ideas to verify in the Instagram app. Real-time availability checking is planned for a future release.

Should my username have numbers or underscores?

Only if you need them. A letters-only handle is easiest to remember, and a single period between words (“maya.bakes”) reads better than an underscore.

Do existing tags update when I change my username?

No. Old @mentions of your previous handle don't follow you to the new one, so update your link-in-bio and other profiles after a change.

Is the Instagram username generator free?

Yes. It's free with no sign-up.
